Overview
A key aim of this Education Authority led project was to use IoT sensors to understand and measure the carbon footprint across the EA estate. This initiative supports the public sector's commitment to reducing emissions and meeting sustainability targets.
Challenge
The Education Authority manages a large estate of buildings across Northern Ireland. Understanding energy consumption patterns and carbon emissions at this scale requires automated data collection and analysis capabilities that didn't previously exist.
Solution
We deployed IoT sensors and developed an analytics platform to provide visibility into energy usage and carbon emissions across the estate.
Sensor Network
LoRaWAN-enabled sensors deployed across buildings to monitor energy consumption, temperature, and environmental conditions.
Carbon Calculation Engine
Automated conversion of energy data into carbon equivalent metrics using UK government emission factors.
Reporting Dashboard
Web-based platform for estate managers to view consumption patterns, identify anomalies, and track progress against targets.
Results
- Automated collection of energy and environmental data across the estate
- Baseline carbon footprint established for future reduction targets
- Identification of high-consumption buildings for targeted improvements
